Mandolin
Tim Connell first joined us in 2016 and we’re happy to have him back this year. We see no reason why mandolin can’t play a larger role in Gypsy jazz as the genre develops here in North America and Tim is among a handful or jazz mandolinists qualified to help carve out that niche within a niche. Here he is with his Stumptown Swing sidekick, Mike Burdette, playing a jazz manouche standard, J’Attendrai:
Tim is a graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music with over twenty-five years of professional fret wear. In addition to the swing thing, Tim can also pick a mean fiddle tune and is regarded as one of the top North American interpreters of Brazilian choro, a genre well-loved by many Gypsy jazzers. Here he’s playing a tune by one of the great composers of choro, Jacob do Bandolim, with fellow mandolinist Jack Dwyer:
Tim regularly tours Europe and North America in the international mandolin supergroup The Ger Mandolin Orchestra. He has been a featured guest artist at national conventions of the Classical Mandolin Society of America and has taught at the Mandolin Symposium and many other music camps over the years. He is currently an Adjunct Professor of Music at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, OR.
Since 2017 is going to be a big year for waltzes at Django in June. let’s go out in 3/4 time. Here’s Tim and Stumptown Swing on the Tony Murena classic, L’Indifference.
