Guitar
There must be something in the water around Gerwen, Nuenen — the Dutch Sinti community there has given the world Stochelo, Jimmy, and Mozes Rosenberg. Another sturdy branch of that same family tree uses a different last name — Schäfer — but bears equally delicious fruit. If you were here when Paulus Schäfer was last at Django in June you’ve already had a taste of it. Folks loved him not only as teacher and performer, but as a warm and generous human being. So those who already know him will be looking forward to the reunion. For those who weren’t here, here’s a video Patrus did at DiJ in 2012, back when the eternally youthful-looking Olli Soikkeli really was young!

Schooled early by Wasso Grunholz and Stochelo during the regular campsite jam sessions, Paulus came to fame when he stepped into the lead guitar seat for the Gipsy Kids following Jimmy Rosenberg’s departure. In 2001, he formed the Paulus Schäfer Gipsy Band with rhythm guitarist Sendelo Schäfer, bassist Jozua Rosenberg and violinist Martien Wagner. His current trio includes Romino Grunholz on rhythm and Noah Schäfer on bass. On special occasions they are joined by Dominique Paats on accordion. One such occasion will be Django in June 2020.
