Not yet 30 years old, Sweden’s Andreas Oberg has already become a recognizable and formidable presence on the international Gypsy Jazz scene. The featured soloist of the fine Hot Club de Suede, he has also performed and recorded with the very best in the genre, including Jimmy Rosenberg, Stochelo Rosenberg, Angelo Debarre, Dorado Schmitt, Florin Nicolescu, and Boulou & Elios Ferre. I had the chance to see him perform on a visit to New York a couple of years ago and we both expressed an interest in having him join us at Django in June at some point. I’m happy to report that that point has already arrived!
This year is a particulary good time for Andreas to join us given the recent publication (by Djangobooks) of his Gypsy Fire: A Collection of Gypsy Jazz Patterns and Arpeggios for Guitar. He and Djangobook’s own Michael Horowitz will give us a little sampling of gypsy fire at their Friday night concert at Helen Hills Hills Chapel and Andreas will be offering two clinics over the course of the weekend covering material from the book and beyond.
